Zach and I studied The Hobbit last year with our homeschool co-op.  Tolkien is one of our favorite authors and our whole family is bursting at the seams waiting for the new movie to come out in December.  We’re hoping to go see the movie as a Family Fun Night sometime next month.

Although Zach and I did a unit study on The Hobbit last year, I wanted to expand upon it in preparation for the movie with all three of the boys.  Since I taught that particular unit last year, I know what Zach already covered and we’re going to dig deeper into the book this time around.  (Although I’ve had a unanimous request from all of my kids to have the tea party at Bilbo’s again with seed cake.  That will be coming up in Lesson 2.)

I thought I’d share our unit here if anyone else would like to join the journey before the movie comes out on December 14th.

Our first lesson was an author study on J.R.R. Tolkien.  I created a Keynote presentation for the boys to watch with me.  It’s an interactive slideshow.  I had to convert it to a QuickTime movie in order to post it on my blog though.  (You may need a QuickTime plugin in order to see it.)  So, pay attention – you’ll be asked some questions throughout the presentation.  Click on the screen to move the presentation along. F.Y.I.: It is a manual presentation NOT automatic.  This way you can go as quickly or slowly as you wish through the slideshow.

Click on the link below to take you to the J.R.R. Tolkien slide presentation.  There is not any audio along with the slideshow.  I just read it to my kids.
