I answered our front door to find a door to door steak salesman.  Okay…this is new.  He had a refrigerator or freezer attached to the back of his truck and was trying to sell me different packages of steak.

“I’m not interested.  Thank you.”

“But…I can offer you a great deal on quality beef.  Here’s the packages I have to offer…”

“It’s the beginning of Lent for us.  We don’t eat meat during Lent.”

“At all?!”

“No.”

“Well…you can still buy it today and freeze it for later.”

“No thank you.”

“You won’t be able to get a deal like this again.”

Justin had shown up at the door slightly before that holding a jar of coins from our table.  I was going to let Justin just hold it next to me and not say anything but the man wouldn’t give up.  So I pointed to the jar in Justin’s hands and told the man, “We don’t buy any meat during Lent.  The point of not eating it is to save the money we would have spent on it and give it to the poor instead.  My son is showing you the jar we just started for the poor.”

The man was completely dumbfounded and definitely was unsure of how to respond.  “Well…thank you very much for taking the time to listen to me.  Have a good day.”

That was a first.
