There are days where I make the sign of the cross over and over again as I leave the room and walk back into it before dealing with a child throwing a tantrum.  This was one of those days.  My boys get overwhelmed easily when it comes to new school work.  I introduced writing stories today.  One child was ready for it…the other was not.  After 4 hours of throwing a continuous tantrum and dragging his feet…this is the story he finally gave me.

Once upon a time there was a boy that liked school but when he has a day off he would cry.  But his mom said, “Shhhhh” be calm my little one.  No one is going to hurt you.  Ok now let us do some school work.  The end.

I have to say, I almost cried.  He didn’t portray me as an ogre!  He portrayed me as calming him down.  I know from their months and months of writing spelling sentences that they tend to write about their feelings.  I’ve had several sentences along the lines of, “Math is not my favorite subject.” and “I want to go play and be done with school.”

It’s the little things in life that keep you going.  This story was one of them.
