Every autumn we’ve seen the boxelder bug hanging around our windows. This year, we have what looks like a swarm of boxelder bugs. They are on every window of the house but especially the west and south facing windows.
The boys kept staring at the bugs today while I was trying to ignore them so I did the only thing there really was to do – we studied about them. We read about boxelder bugs online. Then I had the boys look in the yard for boxelder and maple trees. Followed by coloring this page – per Justin’s request. Then the boys went on the front porch and drew the boxelder bug as the bugs modeled patiently for them.
The bugs eat the seeds of the boxelder and maple tree. When the temperature drops, they like to hibernate behind the siding of homes. They don’t do any damage to houses or the trees therefore I’m really hesitant to spray poison all over my house to get rid of them. I just hate doing that. I caved when we had carpenter ants because they will damage the house but otherwise my kids scoop up the bugs in our house and put them outside…and I let them.
For now, the bugs don’t bother me. We’ll see if I change my mind in the coming months.
