History. It’s full of interesting stories.
We hit the road north headed for Salem to learn about the story behind the Salem Witch Trials.
There’s a possibility that the cause of it was due to ergot poisoning. It is a fungus that grows on cereal grains & causes hallucinations and convulsions. It is a theory that was based on historical facts for the area.
I think the most interesting thing I learned at the museum was where the idea of witches originated – an inability to understand the midwife by the people of the time. People did not understand her knowledge of herbalism and would blame the midwives of witchcraft. Also, the image we have today of a witch riding a broom & pointy hat came from the movie, The Wizard of Oz. Fascinating stuff.
The city played up the idea of the stereotypical witch & aspects of the occult and psychics. We just avoided that stuff in the touristy area. The city itself is gorgeous and we enjoyed walking around. We stopped for dinner at an amazing restaurant that served only made from scratch food – as in, they even made their own ketchup from scratch! Additionally, they only used locally grown produce and meat from grass fed beef. I would definitely be a regular at a restaurant like that at home.
This was another fun and relaxing day for us.
